Now that we know
something of geometrical
optics, it can be easily
understood why and in what
respects the retinal image is a
distorted representation of a
scene. In the discussion that
follows, we can use a
photograph or a
photographically accurate
drawing of a scene as a
reflection of the essential
geometry of the retinal image
because these renditions are
effectively the result of light
from the scene projected on a
plane, just as is the retinal
image. Indeed, photographs and
drawings are comprehensible to
us precisely because they more
or less resemble the image of a
scene as it appears on our
retinas.
