  6. respects the retinal image is a  
  7. distorted representation of a  
  8. scene. In the discussion that  
  9. follows, we can use a  
  10. photograph or a  
  11. photographically accurate  
  12. drawing of a scene as a  
  13. reflection of the essential  
  14. geometry of the retinal image  
  15. because these renditions are  
  16. effectively the result of light  
  17. from the scene projected on a  
  18. plane, just as is the retinal  
  19. image. Indeed, photographs and  
  20. drawings are comprehensible to  
  21. us precisely because they more  
  22. or less resemble the image of a  
  23. scene as it appears on our  
  24. retinas.
